The different EV charging speeds explained

Slow Chargers

Slow chargers are mostly seen at homes as they can take 6-12 hours to charge an electric vehicle, and most common slow chargers are rated at 3.6kW. These sometimes known as "Granny chargers".

Fast Chargers

Fast chargers are rated at either 7kW or 22kW and are mostly found at destination sites such as car parks.

Rapid Chargers

Rapid chargers are the fastest of the three types that we have mentioned here, but they have some variations:

Rapid AC

  • Provide power at 43kW
  • Uses Type 2

Rapid DC

  • Provide power at 50kW
  • Uses CCS or CHAdeMO

Ultra-Rapid DC

  • Provide power at 100kW, 150kW, or 350kW
  • Uses CCS or CHAdeMO
